The Athens metro’s Line 2, which in one direction heads southeast of the Greek capital’s center towards its coastal suburbs, will be extended further to and past the iconic Helleniko property development, with three new stations planned in the seaside and upscale Glyfada municipality: Makedonia Square, Ano (Upper) Glyfada and Glyfada proper.
The decision was made official at a Cabinet meeting on Monday evening, chaired by the prime minister.
The news comes on the heels of another handful of major transportation projects in the greater Athens area, which hosts nearly half the country’s population and the biggest chunk of the economy.
Among others, a suburban rail line (Proastiako) project will be tendered, aimed to link central Athens with western Attica prefecture, to the west of the capital, while rail links are planned for the small Attica ports of Rafina, on the eastern coast, and Lavrion, on the extreme southeastern tip of the prefecture where the greater Athens area is located.
Additionally, a 1.5-billion-euro project to expand the Attiki Odos tollway, which dissects the Greek capital and today concludes at the Elefterios Venizelos Airport has also been unveiled.
