Capital Maritime & Trading this week made good on its high-profile intent to build the first alternative maritime powered MR product carriers, with Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) chosen for the four-tanker deal, with an option for another two.

The vessels will feature cutting-edge propulsion systems, all in line with the maritime company’s turn towards “green investments” in ocean-going shipping. The decision moves Capital Maritime “ahead of the pack” in actions to meet IMO and EU targets for CO2 emission reduction and to combat climate change.

They are the first MR tanker vessels worldwide combining compliance with IMO Phase III and cold ironing (AMP) while being LNG, ammonia and rotor sail ready.

The state-of-the-art-vessels, expected to reach the pinnacle of Korean shipbuilding expertise, will also have the capacity to be fitted with wind rotors.
