
Air travel has been showing a steady upward trend lately. According to data from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in June, passenger traffic increased by 432.7% and arrivals from abroad increased by 1,250.9%.
Overall statistics for the first half of 2021 from all the country’s airports, however, continue to reflect the negative impact on aviation of the Covid-19 pandemic since March 2020, when the first bans and restrictions came into force. flights, recording a small drop of 2.8% compared to last year’s corresponding season, while compared to the first half of 2019 the drop has reached 72.7%.
In particular, from the statistics of the CAA concerning passenger traffic at airports during the semester January – June 2021, the following results are obtained:
The total number of passengers handled reached 6,015,373, showing a decrease of 2.8% compared to the corresponding period of 2020 where 6,188,389 passengers were handled. Regarding the flights at the country’s airports, there is a positive sign as a total of 100,257, of which 60,244 were domestic and 40,013 international, showing an increase of 16.9% compared to the corresponding period of 2020 where a total of 85,790 flights were operated. Comparing the data with those of the first half of 2019 when there were 219,442 flights, a decrease of 54.3% is recorded in total passenger traffic (which was 22,047,719 in 2019), while now for the same semester there is a decrease of 72.7%.

As far as June in particular is concerned, the data show a steady upward trend in international passenger arrivals (+ 1,250.9%) and flights (+ 201.4%).
The new data and the conditions for entering Greece with a vaccination certificate or a negative test or certificate of illness, have led to an increase in travelers who prefer our country for their holidays.
Specifically, in terms of international passenger arrivals in June this year came to 1,181,771 travelers, while only 87,481 passengers arrived in June 2020, an increase of 1,250.9%. The total number of flights (domestic and international) amounted to 39,085, also recording an increase of 201.4% compared to the corresponding period of 2020 where 12,967 flights were operated. The total number of passengers handled (arrivals – departures) reached 3,101,422 passengers, showing an increase of 432.7% compared to the passenger traffic of 2020 which was 582,235 passengers.
Comparing the airport data of June 2021 in relation to the data of June 2019, the arrivals of foreign passengers show a decrease of 46.2% (it was 2,195,531) and total passenger traffic at Greek airports decreased by 46.1% (it was 5,749. 171).
