According to ERT, Gythio and Mavrovouni are being evacuated due to the fire that is burning in the area and is considered one of the most serious that the Fire Brigade has to face, as Nikos Hardalias noted in the official information about the fires. The images coming from Gythio are shocking. The town has been chocked by smoke with the Police and the Traffic Police trying to coordinate the traffic that has been created in the port.
“The situation with the fire in areas of the Municipality of Eastern Mani is very difficult,” the deputy governor of Laconia, Theodoros Veroutis, told the Athenian / Macedonian News Agency (AMNA).
The Mavrovouni-Gythio ring road is closed
As he explained, “the front of the fire is big and the Mavrovouni-Gythio ring road at the height of Mavrovouni has been closed”, while, according to the Municipality of Eastern Mani, more than 10 communities have been evacuated for precautionary reasons.
Regarding the response to the fire, Theodoros Veroutis told AMNA that “apart from the great efforts made by the fire brigade, the Region and the Municipality have provided water tanks and construction machinery”.
He also said that “we have set up fire zones at the Montenegrin junction and we have cleared fields”.
