
The delivery of the 176 workers’ residences to the beneficiaries of the settlement “Corfu V” of state employment agency OAED in the area of Agios Ioannis was completed today, in the presence of the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Kostis Hatzidakis and the governor of OAED Spyros Protopsaltis. In particular, the last 12 workers’ residences were handed over to the beneficiary residents, according to a relevant announcement.
The handover of the houses marks the completion of an important project that has been long overdue for the past 14 years. Giving priority to the solution of the chronic technical, legal and financial pending issues and with coordinated and intensive efforts of the Administration and the competent Services, in close cooperation with the local bodies and representatives, the completion of the settlement, which started in 2007, was accelerated and completed in the the last two years. It is recalled that the first 68 houses were delivered in February 2021, the next 68 in April, 10 in early summer and another 18 in mid-July.
As stated by the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Kostis Hatzidakis, “Today a small “Odyssey” is completed in a positive way. 176 workers’ residences are finally being handed over to citizens who were in dire need of them. The progress made in the last two years has been the catalyst for reaching the conclusion of this useful work. The Mitsotakis government seeks to be the government of the works.”
OAED Commander Spyros Protopsaltis noted that: “Today is a very happy day for 176 families, for all of Corfu and for OAED. The completion of the workers’ residences puts a final end to the many years of suffering of the beneficiaries and is a result of the cooperation and the coordination of OAED with the local community. We continue the effort to close the backlog of the past and to support the country’s workforce with all available means.”
Present at the event were the Corfu MP of the New Democracy Stefanos Gikas, the KINAL MP Dimitris Biankis, the Deputy Regional Governor Melita Andrioti, the Mayor of Central Corfu Meropi Hydraiou, and the Deputy Mayor of Central Corfu Nikolaos Kalogeros.
The settlement “Corfu V” includes 176 houses, in two-storey buildings, as well as 6 shops, a meeting room and landscaped surroundings. The construction of the sewage pipeline will be implemented through the program contract of OAED, the Municipality and DEYAK (Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company of Corfu) signed in July 2020 and will be financed by OAED up to the amount of 1.9 million euros. Until the completion of the pipeline, the drainage will be done through septic tanks and the transport of sewage will be done by DEYAK, in time and with the required frequency.
