Authorities at the Irakleio, Crete airport this week announced the arrest of 19 people on charges of possessing forged travel documents and attempting to depart the country illegally. The arrests were recorded between Aug. 23 and 29.
Migrant smuggling rings often target airports in tourist destinations around Greece during the peak summer months in order to try and smuggle third country nationals – mostly from the Mideast and North Africa – to various countries in central and western Europe via air travel.
