The EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakidou, expressed her satisfaction for the achievement of the goal of 70% of fully vaccinated adults in the EU, stressing at the same time that the new mutations make it necessary to overcome this percentage. Ms. Kyriakidou also stressed that there must be readiness for the provision of supportive doses “if the scientific evidence suggests that this is the way forward.”
“Today we can be proud that the European Vaccination Strategy has paid off, achieving the goal we set in January for 70% of fully vaccinated adults by the end of the summer. “This is an important milestone in our efforts to end the pandemic and its effects on societies and economies, but especially on the loss of human lives,” she said.
Lives saved
She added that “from the selection and joint pre-purchase of safe and effective vaccines, to the immediate organization and implementation of national vaccination strategies by member countries, we have ensured the fastest possible availability of vaccines to our citizens. “Vaccinations save lives every day across the EU, showing once again what we can achieve when we work in pan-European coordination and solidarity.”
“It does not mean we can rest. The new mutations make it a necessary condition to exceed 70% to be safe. We must be one step ahead of the virus. At the same time, we urgently need to address the gap in vaccination rates between our Member States and be prepared to provide supportive doses if the scientific evidence suggests that this is the way to deal with the disease, “said the European Commissioner.
