
16% of the forests of mainland Attica -that is about one sixth of the total- are estimated to have been burned during the recent fires in Schino, Varybombi, Keratea and Vilia, according to an analysis by the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr.
Utilizing the European Union’s CORINE database and according to recent detailed satellite records, the fires were estimated to have burned about 24,000 hectares, of which 18,600 hectares are forest land, accounting for about 16% of the county’s total forest area.
