
Tourist destinations in the southern Aegean rebounded impressively during the current summer season, compared to 2020, with direct flights from abroad to the five biggest airports in the region (Rhodes, Kos, Karpathos, Mykonos and Santorini) doubling, yoy.
In specifically looking at air passenger arrivals, August 2021 results were very positive, up 100 percent compared to the same month in 2020. In terms of numbers, 833,720 passengers were recorded at the specific five airports; up from 421,708 in August 2020.
The biggest increase, percentage wise, was posted by the airport on the island of Karpathos, which has only emerged as a popular destination for holiday-makers over recent years, and specifically by 346 percent. The airport numbers for iconic Santorini followed, at 237 percent; Rhodes 98 percent; Mykonos, 83 percent and Kos, 79 percent.
Airports of the five south Aegean destinations together recorded some 14,500 flights, carrying more than two million arrivals – or one-third of total arrivals to the specific islands.
