Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) placed another order for ships that use liquefied natural gas as fuel in Japanese and Chinese shipyards.

In particular, K Line placed an order for the construction of eight LNG-Fuel car carriers with a capacity of 7,000 Ceu each at Nihon Shipyard, Shin Kurushima Dockyard and China Merchants Jinling Shipyard. Ships will be picked up between 2023 and 2025.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG Fuel) ships are constantly gaining ground among the owners of international shipping as it is considered as the fuel for the transition to a new, more “green” era for shipping.

According to the DNV classification society, there are 596 ships in operation and under construction that use LNG as fuel, of which 221 are in operation and 375 are under construction. Another 199 ships also belong to the LNG Ready category, which means that they can easily use liquefied natural gas as fuel in the future.

The containerships industry seems to collect the most LNG Fuel ships as there are 20 in operation while another 82 under order and in Teu terms the ordered ships constitute 22% of the total order book of containerships.

Next are the tankers with 21 ships in operation and 59 under construction, the chemical transport ships (25 in operation, 39 under construction) the bulk carriers (9.42) and the Car Carriers (6.38) etc.
