Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis promised a prompt reaction by the state apparatus in the wake of a 5.8R earthquake that rattled central Crete on Monday morning, while at the same time expressing his condolences to the family of the sole victim of the tremor.
The moderate quake particularly shook the area around Archalohori, in Irakleio prefecture, with no less than 39 aftershocks subsequently recorded. The biggest aftershock reached 4.8R, and was recorded at 14.02 local time, some five hours after the first quake.
Numerous buildings have sustained damages, with authorities now closely monitoring how aftershocks will affect them.
