The President of the Foundation of the Hellenic World, Ourania Efraimoglou, wife of the late Lazaros Efraimoglou, passed away today, Monday, October 4, at the age of 89. The couple inspired and created the Foundation of the Hellenic World.
With deep sadness, but also gratitude, the Foundation of the Hellenic World bids farewell to Ourania Efraimoglou, who with her long-term philanthropic, social and cultural activity, alongside her husband, offered the maximum to the country with her crowning achievement being, of course, the creation of FHW.
Ourania Efraimoglou was born in Athens in 1932. She graduated from the Ionian School for Girls, while, at the same time, she studied at the French Academy and the Goethe Institute. In 1951 she was admitted to Pierce College, from where he graduated in 1954 with a degree in Commercial Studies. She worked voluntarily for 10 years at the YMCA Of Athens and the “Volunteer Group”. In 1961 she married Lazaros Efraimoglou with whom they had a son, Mr. Dimitris Efraimoglou.
In 1962, together with Lazaros Efraimoglou, they created the Girl’s Home “Filothei i Athenaea”, a structure for hosting underage girls. In 1980 he was educated at the “Athenian Center for the Study of Man” (AKMA), which was founded by Giorgos Vassiliou – for a number of years President of the World Society of Social Psychiatry – and Vasso Vassiliou. From 1984 to 2018, she volunteered her services at AKMA, for 34 consecutive years, while, at the same time, she was General Secretary of the Board. until 2019. In 1993, together with Lazaros Efraimoglou, they founded the Foundation of the Hellenic World, a pioneering cultural and research body in the country, with the aim of promoting our cultural heritage and preserving our historical memory, using new technologies.
Honored by the Academy of Athens
Since the death of Lazaros Efraimoglou, in 2013, she was President of the Foundation of the Hellenic World and was a Life Partner of the Archaeological Society. She has been awarded by the Academy of Athens with the Silver Medal of the Class of Ethical and Political Sciences. She has also been awarded for her philanthropic and social work with the Alumni Achievement Award by the American College of Greece, the Navy, the Alumni Association of the American College of Athens and the Cultural Association of Trikala and was named Great Benefactor of the town of Stemnitsa.
