The 2022 tourism season may reach the “banner year” numbers of 2019, the president of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE), Giannis Retsos, said on Tuesday, speaking during a panel session at a conference in Athens on the subject of “Greece after V”.
Retsos said the 2021 season turned out to be an “unforeseeable” year, insinuating that arrivals and revenues exceeded expectations, with the sector expected even better results for 2022.
Record-breaking 2019 recorded 32 million tourist arrivals and 18.2 billion euros in travel remittances.
Asked about a dilemma of “industry or tourism”, Retsos said there is no “or” in SETE’s planning, as the sector has long promoted a strategy of cooperation with the primary production sector, such as promoting local farm products, or the secondary sector, such culture.
Finally, he said studies show that the tourism sector in Greece has an economic multiplier effect calculated at between 2 to 2.65.
