Former Greek prime minister George Papandreou will reportedly vie for the leadership of the Parliament-represented KI.NAL (Movement of Change) party, a social democrat grouping that includes the once dominant PASOK party founded by the former’s father, three-time premier Andreas Papandreou.
According to reports by the Athens newspaper “Vima”, Papandreou, the prime minister between 2009 to 2011, concluded meetings on Monday with other contenders for the party leadership, and then took to social media to commemorate the same-day anniversary of PASOK’s landslide and inaugural election victory on Oct. 18, 1981. The posting is considered by political pundits as Papandreou’s unofficial statement of entering the party race.
A handful of candidates emerged after current KI.NAL party president Fofi Gennimata withdrew due to health reasons.
The formation picked up 8.1 percent of the vote in a snap general election in July 2019, a figure equaled 22 deputies in the 300-MP legislature.
