A record single-day number of confirmed Covid-19 infections recorded on Tuesday in Greece – 6,700- coincided with the government’s announcement of stricter measures to stem a resurgent pandemic.
The measures, proposed by a blue-chip committee of epidemiologists and public health experts, affect more than one-third of the adult population still not vaccinated for the Covid-19 virus, and include a mandatory two rapid or PCR tests per week for all employees, both in the private and public sector.
In announcing the measures, Greek Health Minister Thanos Plevris reminded that more than 85 percent of patients treated in ICUs for Covid-19 are not vaccinated for the virus.
People seeking to enter banks, public services and retail stores, as well as outdoor food-and-beverage outlets, must also produce negative tests, twice a week.
Additionally, fines are doubled for restaurants bars, cafes and clubs that do not adhere to the measures and screening of customers for vax or previous infection certificates.
