Demolition works switched into full gear at the Helleniko site in coastal southeast Athens this week, ahead of a February 2022 date for the beginning of the first construction at the 620-hectare property development, which is billed as the biggest of its kind in Europe.

Demolition of several buildings began on Monday along the coastal Posidonos avenue, including the old hangars and maintenance facilities that once served Olympic Airways, and which were later transformed into venues for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

The Helleniko site, today part of the “The Ellenikon” project, as its called by concessionaire Lamda Development, for decades hosted Athens’ main commercial airport, military air bases and affiliated infrastructure.

A bevy of wells are also being drilled at the vast site to retrieve environmental and geological data, while military and police sappers also present because demolition and excavation works are being conducted on areas where a WWII-era airfield operated.
