The day-ahead price on Greece’s energy exchange posted record-breaking rates on Tuesday, exceeding levels of 400 euros per MWh, nearly touching the 416-euro mark.

The wholesale price means that providers will purchase electricity as above 400-euro rates on Wednesday. The maximum price of transactions reached 542.5 euros per MWh, and the lowest at 296.55 euros per MWh.

As widely reported over the recent period, the skyrocketing international price of natural gas for electricity production is behind the surging power rates in Greece, which now covers 52.68 percent of the country’s domestic needs. Conversely, power generated from renewable energy sources fell to 11.02 percent of the total; 15.27 percent coming from hydroelectric plants.
