
The number of single-day Covid-19 infections recorded in Greece on Wednesday in reached 24,246 over the past 24 hours. Sixty-eight cases were detected at border points, a figure that has continued to rise over the past week or so.
The figure brings the number of confirmed Covid-19 infections in the country, since the beginning of the pandemic, to 1,592,460.
Additionally, 77 related fatalities were recorded on the day, bringing the death toll to 21,637. In terms of the victims, 95.1 percent had an underlying condition or were aged above 70. The average age of the victims remained fixed at 78.
A total of 670 patients remained intubated in hospital ICUs. Their median age is 64 years, while 79.9 percent have an underlying condition or are above the age of 70. In terms of the latter, 565 (84.33 percent) are unvaccinated or partly vaccinated and 105 (15.67 percent) are fully vaccinated.
In a related development, a blue-chip experts’ committee on Wednesday recommended to the Greek government that restrictive measures against the spread of the Covid-19 be extended by another week to Sunday, Jan. 23.
The measures were applied on Dec. 30 until Jan. 16, and imposed the closing of all food-and-beverage establishments, including night clubs, at midnight.
The use of high protection face masks was also made mandatory in public transports.
