Alexis Tsipras indirectly but clearly requested the American support vis-à-vis the provocations of Turkey against Greece, addressing the US ambassador to Athens.
In particular, according to a statement from the official opposition, the importance of US pressure on Turkey in order to end provocative statements and violations and enter into substantial de-escalation negotiations, with a view to delimiting the continental shelf / EEZ in the Hague, was stressed by the head of SYRIZA to the US Ambassador to Greece, Geoffrey Pyatt, with whom he met today, Thursday.
Mr. Tsipras also stressed the support of SYRIZA for any initiative for peace in Ukraine, for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country and in the implementation of the Minsk Agreements.
Opposition to the revision of the Greek-American defense agreement
Mr. Tsipras stressed that “in the medium term, the goal should be to establish a pan-European security and armaments architecture that includes Russia, based on the principles of the OSCE and the European Security Charter.”
At the same time, he stressed his support for the further promotion of the Strategic Dialogue for Greek-American relations on a mutually beneficial basis.
Mr. Tsipras “reiterated the disagreement of SYRIZA with the revision of the Greek-American defense agreement, as it is not carried out on a mutually beneficial basis and weakens the role of Greece as a pillar of peace and stability in the region.”
