Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis repeated his proposal regarding the need to impose a ceiling on natural gas prices and the transfer of this cost to the electricity market and consumers in the discussion on energy at the European Council on Friday, government sources said.

The prime minister referred to Friday’s announcement by major European power producers, who asked the European leaders to strike at the root of the problem and consider a ceiling for wholesale gas prices at a level that will truly protect European consumers, the sources added.

“We must send a message to those that speculate and have made fortunes,” the prime minister stressed, while repeating his support for the joint purchase of natural gas by the EU.

In a discussion Mitsotakis held earlier on the margins of the European Council with French President Emmanuel Macron, it was agreed that Greece will take part in a probably humanitarian mission to Mariupol, the government sources said.

They said that Greece’s especial interest in Mariupol, due to the Greek community there that has already sustained losses, was known.
Prior to the meeting, at the NATO leaders’ meeting, Mitsotakis had referred to the tragedy taking place in Mariupol, which he said has been “almost wiped off the map”.
