The Mayor of Piraeus, Mr Giannis Moralis, spoke on the show “MEGA weekend” about the city of Piraeus that is changing, but also about the hosting of refugees from Ukraine in the municipality.
Mr Moralis said that 25 refugees from Kharkiv, Kiev and Odessa are hosted in hotels and in the Centers for the Open Care for the Elderly.
He mentioned that among them there are mothers with their children, people who are mentally suffering.
“I hope we don’t have to host them for too long. I hope this story ends soon” he added.
Regarding the changes taking place in the municipality of Piraeus, Mr Giannis Moralis stated that there is a lot of optimism. Their systematic work now pays off and he also characterized the Piraeus Tower as a great success of the municipal authority, because for almost 50 years the building remained untapped. He also estimated that, in 2024, the Tower will be fully operational, offering many new job opportunities.
Regarding the next plans of the municipality, he said that they want Piraeus, in general, to acquire an “extroversion”, to become a “smart” city, with “smart” citizens.
Regarding the traffic problem of the city, Mr Giannis Moralis said that they plan the undergrounding of the Electric Urban Railway (ISAP) lines from the Karaiskakis stadium to the port, so that there will be an extra traffic lane to the port.
“We are trying this project to be subsidized by the NSRF of the next period,” added the mayor of Piraeus.
In conclusion, he referred to the private investments that have been made and are being made in the city of Piraeus and are particularly important, as they offer new job opportunities, helping in this way, to come up against the problem of unemployment.
