A prosecutor in the western port city of Patras is expected to file a criminal indictment against a woman whose three young daughters all died within a span of a few years under undetermined circumstances, with the last living and eldest child, aged 8, passing away in an intensive care ward.

According to a news report by Athens-based Mega channel, a high-ranking police source cited the prospect of an indictment and the woman’s transfer to Athens for questioning.

Findings are also expected to be revealed from a battery of toxicological tests have taken place over the recent period on blood and tissue samples coming of the last little girl.

According to the Mega report, a substance was found in little Georgina’s blood that was not part of the pharmaceuticals administered at the children’s hospital in Patras.

Earlier, medical examiner Charalambos Koutsis spoke live on a Mega current affairs program and cited the drug ketamine, a short-acting intravenous anesthetic, which if administered in large doses, causes apnea and death.

“It is a substance that is found forensically and in toxicology tests, because in certain doses it can cause death,” he said.

According to Dr. Koutsis, ketamine is available in Greece as a veterinary preparation, but there hospital administration of the substance is not precluded. He added that the drug is not sold in pharmacies.

According to hospital records, the deceased girl was not administered the drug.
The case has generated a firestorm of media and social media scrutiny in Greece over the past two months, and after Georgina passed away in January 2022.
