The latest opinion poll results released in Greece – amid the war in Ukraine its multiplying effect on energy and food prices, among others – show ruling New Democracy (ND) with an 8.5-percentage point lead over main opposition SYRIZA party.
If accurate, the result means that center-right ND continues to field a comfortable lead over leftist SYRIZA even after two and a half years in power, a period that witnessed a world-wide virus pandemic, a partially locked-down economy for several months, and now, an all-out Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Specifically, asked which party they would vote for if elections were held on Sunday, 32 percent of respondents picked ND; 23.5 percent said SYRIZA; 14 chose the social democrat KINAL-PASOK party; the Community Party (KKE) picked up 6 percent, followed by another two small Parliament-represented parties. The results are derived from valid responses given.
Asked which party they believed will come in first-past-the-poll, regardless of their preference, 56 percent of respondents said ND, and 24 percent opted for SYRIZA.
The poll was conducted by the Pulse firm and presented on the evening prime-time newscast of Athens-based Skai TV.
On the question of who is most suitable to be prime minister, incumbent Kyriakos Mitsotakis or SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras, 38 percent of respondents picked Mitsotakis; 33 percent responded “neither”, and 25 favored Tsipras.
