
How many accommodations are there on the platforms? This is a question often heard in discussions concerning short-term rentals as well. The Short-Term Accommodation Managers Association (STAMA Greece) is trying to find the answer. So, according to data from Transparent, a strategic partner of STAMA Greece, the total number of accommodations, in the country, avaible on the platforms is 187,695. (No rooms, Accommodation).
STAMA Greece clarifies that “when we say accommodation we refer to any type of accommodation that has found its place on the online booking platforms Airbnb, Booking.com, VRBO, & Trip Advisor. The types of accommodation are: Hotels, Apartments, Serviced Apartments, Villas, Rooms to let, Hostel and some boats”.
Given that Athens is the country’s largest tourist destination, it is no coincidence that accommodation is also being recorded outside the imaginary boundaries of the city.It should be noted that Athens has the most listings of apartments. But the total number of accommodation in the Athens basin and Piraeus is 11,328, based on Transparent data. Similarly, the total number of accommodation in Thessaloniki, excluding double registrations, is 3,047.
As STAMA points out, the data (listings) cannot detect properties without the registration number of immovable property. STAMA supports they should be taken down from the platforms. It should also be noted that the number of accommodation is dynamic and not linear. For instance, many properties were withdrawn due to Covid-19. Some became part of long-term rentals while some others had been withdrawn and are now again available on the platforms. The data we are releasing concern the listings.
STAMA, in collaboration with Transparent and through their strategic partnership, will continue to release data for the Greek market.
The Short-Term Accommodation Managers Association (STAMA Greece) was founded in January 2021 by the leading companies in the sector and is the only institution from Greece, member of the European Holiday Home Association (EHHA) based in Brussels. STAMA represents 38 members with 3,038 properties in 39 regions.
