The 2nd online workshop of the European Shortsea Network under the Italian Presidency focused on how to manage the issues of digitization and the new environmental Regulations by the shipping industry, so that Shortsea Shipping (SSS) promotes green development and remains sustainable at the same time.
Ms. Sappho Simantoni, Director of SPC Greece, presented the revised position paper of ESN and referred to the practices followed by European countries with the aim of decarbonizing shortsea shipping.
Through the presentations of the speakers, the role of European funding programs in the direction of implementing the goals of reducing carbon dioxide emissions in shortsea shipping, due to a lack of financial tools, was highlighted.
In addition, special reference was made to the need to adopt a new national legislative framework in the countries of the European Union, which will promote and support the necessary reforms for the modernization of the fleet and ports.
SPC Greece
SPC Greece was founded in 1998 and is one of the founding members of the European NMA Network. The Center has been entrusted by the Ministry of Shipping with the responsibility of monitoring and implementing community decisions related to Short Sea Shipping at national and European level and operates under the Hellenic Shortsea Shipowners Association (HSSA).
SPC Greece has twice assumed the presidency of the European Network, each time contributing to its strengthening, while together with SPC Spain, he represents the Network at the European Sustainable Shipping Forum.
HSSA supports European initiatives with the aim of playing a decisive role in European events by contributing with its expertise to the formulation of policies and strategies for the promotion and strengthening of NMA
