In the further protection and exploitation of the cultural heritage of the Medieval city of Rhodes and the promotion of its historicity, the Ministry of Culture and Sports is proceeding with the integrated Strategic Plan for the promotion of the archaeological site of the ancient shipyards and the gardens of the Palace of the Grand Master .
The project aims at the maintenance, formation, promotion and visitability of an archaeological site exposing a variety of time periods and the connection of the monuments to each other, through a documented, pleasant and educational route.
The venues to be highlighted cover 1.8 hectares
The area highlights five distinct levels including remains of the Hellenistic and Roman times – the shipyards (neoria) of the military port of the ancient city of Rhodes and the complex of the Roman area of the Four Gates, with the intersecting streets, restored medieval buildings, such as the Knight’s Mint (Zecca), and the imposing Grand Master’s Palace (Castello), and the famous Governor’s Garden from the years of Italian rule.
Numerous and rare architectural fragments from various periods from excavations in the city of Rhodes are kept in the “Perivola” venue, many of which are planned for exhibition at the site.
At the same time, in the context of the implementation of the project, excavation material of past years, which currently lies at “Perivola” will be documented, so that part of it will be exhibited with an appropriate configuration of the premises.
At the same time, in the area, which for the first time will be given over to the Medieval City, therefore to the citizens and visitors of Rhodes, recreational areas are created offering a wonderful place of culture and education.
A space for everyone
The project shapes and highlights a potentially new archaeological site, in the heart of the historical center of the Medieval City, where the visitor will be able to obtain a clear view of the history of Rhodes from ancient times to the present day.
The goal is for this timeless archaeological site, with its important monuments dating from the Hellenistic era to the times of the Italian occupation, functionally unified, equipped with modern infrastructure, and accessible to the disabled and handicapped, to be handed over for the enjoyment of the local community and the numerous visitors to the island.
