The Agriculture Ministry is implementing the construction of the fishing boat shelter in Nea Krini in the municipality of Kalamaria, Thessaloniki, with a budget of 6,601,400 euros.
The operation is co-financed by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund and is included in the category of projects under phasing status 3 of the Action Plan, as it meets all the conditions set by the relevant circulars of the National Coordination Authority.

The fishing boat shelter is to be built in the coastal zone of the area of Nea Krini of the Municipality of Kalamaria, from the height of Vryoulon Street to approximately Aeolias Street, in continuation of the legally existing earthworks carried out for this purpose in 1996 during the construction of the Thessaloniki Music Hall .
Also in the Municipality of Kalamaria and in an adjacent area there is the marina of Thessaloniki (Aretsou), which has been designated as a port – place of unloading/transshipment of coastal fishing vessels and swordfish trawlers. Due to the limited space available in the Aretsos marina for fishing boats, a large number of them either anchor outside the marina (when weather conditions permit), without the necessary infrastructure, or use other remote fishing shelters. In addition, the marina is planned to be privatized by the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund and hence the fishermen will have to leave the eastern port basin, where they dock their boats with great difficulty, and relocate to the new shelter, the completion of which is characterized as important and urgent .
The physical object of the operation includes the construction of a windward pier (breakwater), two leeward piers transversely to the coast, an internal wharf and consequently the creation of a functional harbor area of 20,476m2 and a total wharf length of of 462m. Also included is the construction of an building to host electro/mechanical functions with the necessary networks.
The Act implementing the project also includes sub-projects of archaeological work on land and sea, photo-marking of the shelter by the Navy, and the necessary connections with the Public Utility Networks for water supply and electricity. The use of the services of a Technical Consultant – key researcher is also planned and finally a sub-project is planned for the investigation of the quality and the way of disposal of the dredged silt.
With the completion of the Act, the construction of a modern and fully equipped fishing boat shelter, with a capacity of 83 commercial vessels (25 purse-seiners and trawlers and 55 coastal fishing vessels), will be achieved, which will cover the needs of the fishermen of the Municipality of Kalamaria and the entire fleet of the wider area of the Thessaloniki.
