Greece’s relevant deputy sports minister expressed confidence on Thursday that this year’s EKO Acropolis Rally, part of the World Rally Championship, will be the best ever, in comments to a local radio station.
Deputy Minister Lefteris Avgenakis cited 70 participants from around the world, the most in 15 years.
The rally will also mark the return to Greece, after a decade, of French legend Sébastien Loeb.
The Acropolis Rally will also witness the competition of 13 hybrid vehicles.
In terms of local participation, 20 Greek drivers with their teams will race.
The highlight will be a special course at the Athens Olympic Stadium (OAKA), with an expected sell-out crowd of 65,000 in the stands and an estimated 100 million television viewers from around the world.
The Acropolis Rally begins on Sept. 8, 2022 and continues until Sunday Sept. 11.
