The number of undocumented third country nationals illegally entering the country, along with human traffickers, arrested in Greece between May and July 2022 significantly increased, compared to the corresponding trimester in 2021, Greek police announced on Tuesday.
In releasing figures for the first seven months of the year, police said particularly high numbers of illegal migrants were recorded along the land border with Turkey at the Evros River in northeast Greece.
Most migrant traffickers were also arrested in the same region.
Out of a total 386 traffickers arrested around the country from January to July 2022, 312 were intercepted in the Evros region.
The number of undocumented migrants illegally entering Greece increased by 113.1 percent in the May-July 2022 period, compared to the same quarter in 2021, or a total 4,126 third country nationals; 1,936 in 2021.
