An undersea power line connecting the large island of Evia with the smaller Sporades isle of Skiathos, to its north, was officially inaugurated on Monday at a high-voltage sub-station on the former.

Skiathos’ link with the mainland grid has been in operation since early July, with the connection also serving the rest of the Sporades islands, such as Skopelos and Alonissos, which are located in the west-central Aegean, off the eastern mainland of Greece.
The trio of isles record a surge in electricity demand during the summer tourism season.

According to the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO or ADMIE) the project includes 29-km submarine cable, a 30-km overland transfer line on Evia, a new gas insulated sub-station (GIS) on Skiathos and upgrades of the current high-voltage infrastructure in northern Evia, Greece’s second largest island.
