A seaplane license for the port of Kyllini, in the northwest Peloponnese, close to the western port city of Patras and the Olympia archaeological site, has been issued, with a joint ministerial decision approving the development.
The license essentially allowed the municipality managing the port/harbor to proceed with foreseen actions for the construction of necessary infrastructure to field seaplane flights.
Similar licenses have been issued for the island of Ios, the port city of Volos, Kalamata, and Rethymno on Crete. Licenses for operation of such seaplane bases have already been issued to Corfu and the nearby isle of Paxous.
Another 23 such requests are pending, mostly by islands in the Aegean and Ionian Seas that don’t have commercial airports.
The prospect of operating a network of seaplane routes on numerous isles, mainland harbors and even lakes in Greece has long been proposed, with significant investments previously made. However, to date no permanent route has emerged.
