A rock slide inside the central gallery of the IMERYS Bauxite Mines near the village of Variani, at the 51st kilometer of the Lamia – Amfissa road, has left one worker dead and two trapped.
According to what has become known so far, the incident involves gallery 617 of the Bauxite Mines where, under unspecified circumstances, a rock detached and fell on a 4×4 vehicle, at a distance of more than 1 kilometer from the entrance of the gallery. The 45-year-old man who was riding in the vehicle to supervise the works died after being crushed by the rock, while two other workers are trapped.
There is an ongoing effort by workers with the company’s machines to reach the site and remove debris that have blocked the gallery, while the trapped workers have signaled that they are in good health.
According to information from the Fire Service, the rock has been removed while firefighters from the 7th EMAK rescue team, the Amfissa Fire Service and the Polydroso emergency detachment have rushed to the scene for help.
