Greece is one of five candidate countries in the running to host the annual IMF-World Bank meetings in 2026, after the country’s relevant finance ministry submitted an application for the prestigious event.

A short-list announced this week includes, besides Greece, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and the UAE.
A final decision will be taken next year.

The bid by the Greek side reportedly includes personal support by Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

If Greece and its capital of Athens are ultimately chosen, the meetings would be the first held in a European capital in roughly 25 years.

Such as development would also be highly symbolic, coming more than a decade after a punishing economic and fiscal crisis witnessed three successful bailout of the country by institutional creditors.
