Mevlut Cavusoglu used the phrase that Recep Tayyip Erdogan constantly repeats “we will come suddenly one night”, launching new threats against Greece.
Speaking at a press conference, the Turkish foreign minister expressed his dismay at a Greek military exercise in Rhodes and Lesvos, arguing that Greece continues to provoke.
“It is not possible to remain silent about this. If Greece does not abandon the policy of violations, the sovereignty of the islands will be discussed,” he said characteristically.
Continuing his incendiary statements, he asserted: “Either Greece backs down or we’ll do what we have to do.” That is why the president told us that “we will suddenly come overnight.” If you don’t want peace, we will do whatever it takes. Whoever sows winds reaps storms.”
It is recalled that on Monday the Turkish Foreign Minister levelled incendiary rhetoric, against his Greek counterpart, Nikos Dendias. “Everybody started paying attention there. That is, to the Turkic world, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Central Asia.
Today (Monday) Nikos Dendias (went) immediately there… He took his breath there. He does some traveling. Wherever we go, of course, he runs behind. Be well. Nikos Dendias. He’s an old friend of mine. And of course, they are concerned. Why are they worried? The ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ became an observer member at the summit in Samarkand. But this is a start. In fact, with the Turkish world accepting the ‘TRNC’ as an observer member, the Organization of Turkic States and the Turkish world thus descended into the Eastern Mediterranean. So its reach has been strengthened,” he said.
The scenarios of conflict with Greece
The most pressing question is whether Recep Tayyip Erdoğan – and Turkish officials – will be content with the well-known threats and saber rattling, or whether they will attempt to put into practice the cries for war against Greece.
Antonis Klapsis, assistant professor of diplomacy, and Konstantinos Ziazias, honorary head of Arrmy General Staff, spoke on this topic.
“The field of confrontation brings votes to Erdogan and no one can guarantee that nothing will happen as in a time of tension errors and failures occur,” said the assistant professor of diplomacy, adding:
“Turkey does not have as its main scenario the creation of a hot incident with Greece. Not only because Mr. Erdogan has elections ahead of him, but mainly because he counts Greece much more than he counts other neighboring countries, such as Syria and Iraq, in which he has repeatedly intervened, taking advantage of the fact that Turkey is very stronger militarily than them. On the contrary, Greece can oppose its own power and therefore deal significant blows to Turkey.”
“Turkey’s strategy is to create problems and lead us to the negotiation table where we have a lot to lose”, stressed General Ziazias.
He added that the alliances with countries in the Middle East, with France, with the United States create difficulties for Turkey, which is doing political bowling to our allies, said K. Ziazias and emphasized: “It is a given that Turkey cannot do anything at this time and at least until the elections, Erdogan does not risk a hot incident.”
