Seismic surveys for the detection of natural gas deposits are in full progress in the marine areas of the Ionian Sea and Crete.
A map posted on LinkedIn by the Hellenic Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Company (HEREMA) presents the blocks where seismographic vessels are located scanning… the subsoil to receive data that will capture potential targets of natural gas deposits.

As HEREMA states in its post “Today we celebrate the completion of another critical milestone for the promotion of Greece’s national gas exploration program! Congratulations to Energean and PGS on the successful completion of the North Ionian ‘Block 2’ 3D seismic surveys.
HEREMA refers to Energean and block 2 where the seismographic vessel Ramform Hyperion of the Norwegian PGS completed work in the marine concession leased by the Greek company, listed on the London and Tel Aviv stock exchanges.
“The completion of the program follows the two-dimensional surveys carried out earlier this year, in the South and Central Ionian “Block Ionian” and “Block 10“, notes EDEFEP referring to the surveys carried out at the beginning of the year by Helleniq Energy (formerly EL.PE ).
Last week the company to which the two aforementioned areas have been awarded started 3D surveys of the ‘Block Ionian’ with the same PGS vessel Ramform Hyperion. Similar works will follow in “Block 10”
Crete
In its post on LinkedIn, HEREMA also talks about the ongoing investigations in the “West of Crete” and “Southwest of Crete” concessions.
The work is carried out by PGS’s Sanco Swift seismograph.
Record
HEREMA talks about a record: “A total of six seismic surveys are taking place in a single year. This is a national record in the history of exploration in Greece”
During all of these surveys, Hellenic Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Company personnel are on board the seismic vessels, working with the survey teams to ensure that operations follow the Environmental Action Plans and are conducted to the highest safety and environmental standards.
“The results will help identify natural gas deposits that can help strengthen European security of supply at a critical time and contribute valuable resources to Greece’s energy mix and efforts to accelerate the transition to green energy,” concludes HEREMA.
