Eva Kaili’s side is trying to distance herself from the other three defendants in the Qatargate case.
The MEP is attempting to support her line of defence, which is based on the her allegation that she knew nothing about the money found in the home she maintains with her husband Francesco Giorgi.
After all, this was also the reason why the former vice-president of the European Parliament did not attend the hearing before the judicial council on Wednesday.
Fatal mistakes
However, according to a source from her environment, who spoke to SKAI channel, she herself made moves that burdened her position and ultimately caused the automatic procedure and her arrest.
First, when she was brought to the judicial police headquarters and asked by the prosecutor to give an explanation, Mrs. Kaili said that she had seen some suitcases with money in the house in the past.
Second, it turned out to be wrong to ask her father to move the money from the family home to a safe place, as he did not foresee that the Belgian police were watching. This caused the spontaneous process and her arrest.
Thirdly, Eva Kaili went so far as to vote in favor of Qatar in a committee of the European Parliament, in which she did not even participate. As a document presented by MEGA channel revealed, the vote was for the Libe committee in which the Greek MEP was not a member. In fact, Eva Kaili voted for the Gulf country at the same time she made the infamous statement that “Qatar is a pioneer in labor rights”.
Eva Kaili is being prosecuted for money laundering and corruption. Each of these charges can cost her up to 5 years. The assessment of her lawyers is that if she agrees to cooperate, she may be sentenced to 3-4 years in prison and maybe get a suspended sentence.
However, she insists through her lawyers on her innocence, arguing that she had nothing to do with the money found. Despite this, there are many questions about what she knew, how she operated, and how she reacted when the police operation began.
How Giorgi tried to exonerate Eva Kaili
All this while her partner, Francesco Giorgi, is reportedly taking full responsibility for the cash found in the couple’s home, saying the former vice-president of the European Parliament had no knowledge of his actions.
According to media in Belgium, Giorgi admitted that he was a member of an organization that had behind-the-scenes contacts with both Qatar and Morocco, with the aim of interfering in European affairs for their benefit.
Eva Caili’s Italian partner has also reportedly confirmed that former Italian MEP (Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats – S&D) Pier Antoni Panzeri is indeed the head of the ring.
Also according to La Repubblica, Giorgi confessed to the corruption case, but defended Eva Kaili, asking the Belgian authorities to release her. “He must be with our daughter,” he said, according to the newspaper. It has nothing to do with the case, he insisted.
The Italian allegedly implicated two more active MEPs who belong to the group of European Socialists: Belgian Mark Tarabella, whose house was searched by the Belgian police in the presence of the President of the European Parliament herself, and the Italian Andrea Cozzolino, in which F. Giorgi worked as an assistant. MEP Tarabella denies all accusations
