Continued threats from Ankara. After Ibrahim Kalin’s statements concerning the casus belli against Greece, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan took over during his speech to the AKP Parliamentary Group.
The Turkish president directly threatened Greece, saying that if Athens “behaves itself”, Ankara will not strike it with missiles. “We didn’t have a missile and now that we built ours, the Greeks panicked,” Erdogan said, according to Turkish media, and continued: “The newspapers are writing headlines: ‘Sleep and the Turk is sending Tayfun from Smyrna’.” .
The Turkish president was quick to point out that the missile has a range of 510 km, stressing that this is not enough. “We must increase it to 1,000 kilometers,” he said, adding:
“Calm down, behave yourself. We have no connection with Athens. We don’t touch those who don’t touch us” he pointed out.
“Severe consequences if Greece expands territorial waters in Crete”
Earlier, in an interview with the NTV television network and asked about what Ankara will do in the event of an extension of territorial waters in Crete to 12 miles, the representative of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Ibrahim Kalin, said:
“Not at 12 miles, but even at 6, 7, 8, 9 miles to be extended, it is not possible to accept that, it is out of the question. This will have serious consequences for Greece as well.”
He “urged” Athens not to follow “such a path”. “If they take a step in this direction, we are never going to leave it unanswered,” he said characteristically.
Kalin also recalled the statements of the country’s foreign minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, on the issue.
“The foreign minister also told us this the other day. Not only at 12 miles, but any action taken beyond 6 miles, will be immediately met with the objection, opposition and vigorous resistance of Turkey. So let’s state it clearly. It is never possible to accept this, even if they do not go to 12 miles, but to 6,7,8,9. This is out of the question. This would have serious consequences for Greece as well. In other words, we wish and expect them not to resort to such a path. If they take a step in this direction, we are never going to leave it unanswered.”
As he explained, an extension of territorial waters in Crete to 12 miles would mean that a Turkish or even foreign ship leaving the Black Sea, the Marmara or the Aegean would only reach the Mediterranean if it passed through Greek territorial waters.
“Something we cannot accept” he asserted, saying at the same time that this is against International Maritime Law and “is not consistent with neighborly relations”.
He also stated that he does not see “any benefit” that Greece can derive from the increase in tensions, while he reiterated that Turkey wants to build and develop its relations with Greece on the basis of logic and mutual respect. and mutual interest.
At the same time, he hastened to call “futile” the “attempts to put pressure on Turkey through other countries”. “In other words, these will have no influence on Turkey and will damage Greek-Turkish relations. Possible damage to Greek-Turkish relations will increase tension in the region. This will not benefit Greece,” said Kalin.
