President of antiseismic protection organization Efthymios Lekkas made a different assessment than that made by seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos regarding the earthquake in Evia that occurred on Wednesday night (04/01). He initially said there was “no concern” after the 4.2-magnitude quake, while Mr Lekkas later added to SKAI channel that “it’s probably the aftershock we’ve been waiting for”.
When asked if Wednesday’s earthquake is from the same epicenter as that of the December 28 tremor, Efthymios Lekkas explained that “it is not from the same point, it is more northeast but from the same seismogenic area and the same rift zone.”
“We expected it to ease up with magnitude 3-R earthquakes”
“In this sense, we are more at ease than the phenomenon’s release,” Efthymios Lekkas added, adding that “we are waiting for it to release with earthquakes of magnitude 3 and below so that we can say that we are done with this phenomenon.”
He added, finally, about the 4.2 Richter earthquake that “we had included yesterday’s event in the assessments we had made (in the earthquake risk committee that met after the 4.9 Richter in Psachna).
What Mr. Papadopoulos mentioned
“Earthquake on 22.01 with a preliminary magnitude of 4.3 (EMSC) in the Vlachia region of central Evia also felt in Attica. In my previous post I pointed out that there we have activated a new focus. Great attention to Evia.”
Earlier, on Wednesday morning, with another post, he had pointed out the following: “New focus of earthquakes in Evia! A magnitude 3.4 earthquake and some smaller ones occurred at dawn near Vlachia to the northeast from Messapia (Psachna). In Psachna, the post-earthquake sequence continues.”
