The inflation rate in Greece eased to 7.6 percent in December 2022, down from 8.8 percent the previous month, on an annual basis. The corresponding figures for the Eurozone were 9.2 percent last month and 10.1 percent in November 2022, according to figures released by Eurostat on Friday.
As with similar monthly performances over the recent period, surging energy costs contributed the most to price hikes in the Eurozone: 25.7 percent in December, down from 34.9 percent the previous month. Price hikes for durable goods, alcohol and tobacco followed.
Greece’s statistics authority, EL.STAT, put the annualized inflation rate in Greece for November 2022 at 8.5 percent.
Conversely, although the rate of inflation slowed in the specific month, significant hikes were recorded for certain basic goods, especially foodstuffs.
For instance, dairy products in the country in November increased by 25.3 percent (on an annual basis), followed by cooking oils (up 20.4 percent), breads (18.7 percent), meats (16.7 percent) and vegetables (12.6 percent).
