![Greeks take to Fakeaway: The new trend “born” in the lockdowns seems to be here to stay [survey]](https://www.ot.gr/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/burger-gd53bf6733_1920.jpg)
It became popular during the pandemic, out of necessity, but the “Fakeaway” trend is here to stay. This results from research carried out by Cookpad, from which it follows that 2023 will probably be the year of the new trend, the opposite of Takeaway or delivery.
“Fakeaway” is nothing more than a home cooked meal that copies a food that we usually order from outside or otherwise “Homemade Junk Food”.
The survey
The survey reveals that more than half (53%) of the participants in Greece attempt to make their favorite delivery at home in order to “eat more healthily” (63%), but also to “save money” (42%).
On average, Greek households spend 19 euros per order, and they order about 3 times a month.
Young people aged 18-34 order out more, with almost half, 47%, ordering out 1-2 times a week, compared to one in four, 26%, of over-50s.
Of particular interest is the finding that 87% of respondents say that delivery prices have increased compared to a year ago, and 30% say that they have doubled, indicating that the propensity to order food is likely to decrease further.
Nafsika Limnaiou, Community Manager of Cookpad’s cooking platform, comments: “Greece is one of the countries where childhood obesity is flourishing, and young people aged 15-24 cook 40% less than the global average. This is scary, especially considering that about half of young people order 1-2 times a week. So it gives us great joy to see people who cook at home now experimenting with food that they usually order to eat, making meals that are healthier, but also more economical without depriving themselves of their favorite delivery dishes! Homemade pizza is definitely the most popular as there is a huge variety of recipes with some of them taking less than 15 minutes to make and costing ¼ of the price of a ready-made pizza from the pizzeria!”
Cookpad suggests 5 reasons to prefer “Fakeaway” instead of ordering:
- Ordering in isn’t always the shortest way: The average time to receive an order is around 30′, but this increases at peak times, which means you’ll probably be waiting for your food for more than 1 hour.
- Guaranteed good taste: 1 in 10 feel disappointed after eating food they’ve ordered, compared to 1 in 100 people who eat a home-cooked meal.
- It arrives hot on your plate: 35% of participants prefer to eat what they cook themselves, and that’s a very good reason!
- You save hundreds of euros annually… 89% say it costs less than 10 euros to cook a “Fakeaway” for your family, about half compared to ordering!
- It makes you feel better! People feel 4 times more energized after a home-cooked meal (19%) than a take-out meal (4%). Additionally, post-meal satisfaction levels double from 25% (delivery) to 55% (homemade).
- Finally, only 6% of the people who took part in the research stated that they are not interested in “Fakeaway”, while 1/3 (36%) intend to follow a recipe to make their favorite delivery at home.
