This year, consumers will be faced with the most expensive Tsiknopempti-Fat Thursday in recent years as increases in meat are high.
Tsiknopempti is part of the traditional celebrations of Apókries, the Greek Carnival season. The celebration centers on the consumption of large amounts of grilled and roasted meats.
The traders of the Varvakeio cantral Athens market and the butchers of the whole country are waiting for the consumers who will buy meat for the Tsiknopepti table.
In the Piraeus market, meat prices remain stable with many consumers having already shopped for fear of price increases.
Lamb and goat are sold for 9 euros per kilo, while pork skewers, whose price ranges from 6 to 8 euros, are the most expensive. Pork beely cuts are also proced at 6 euros and sausages up to 9 euros per kilo. Consumers will find beef at 8.99 euros per kilo.
According to the butchers, people primarily prefer ribs, pork bellies and pork chops.
Price hikes
Market analysts estimate that food price increases will continue at least for the first half of 2023, since, despite the decline in energy prices, the prices of basic raw materials remain at very high levels. in 2022 as a whole, average annual inflation was recorded at 9.6%, the highest rate since 1994.
Although average inflation in the Eurozone is slightly higher, structural inflation in Greece remains high, partially highlighting the resilience of demand and the need to further strengthen production and competition in product and service markets.
The final month of 2022, December, closed with further deceleration in inflation, with the consumer price index standing at 7.2% from 8.5% in November, 9.1% in October and 12% in September.
