Attorneys for jailed Euro-MP Eva Kaili filed an appeal on Friday to request her release from pre-trial detention in Belgium, with the motion expected to be adjudicated within 15 days.
A day earlier, a pre-trial council in Brussels extended her detention for another two months. Kaili, who was deposed as a European Parliament vice-president, stands accused influence peddling in return for bribes and kickbacks, allegedly by agents working for the Gulf state of Qatar, with the explosive case now known as “Qatargate”.
Defense attorney called for Kaili’s conditionally release, even with the mandatory wearing of an ankle monitor.
She was arrested last December in Brussels in relation to the Qatargate furor. Italian former MEP Antonio Panzeri, who was arrested the same day, will also remain in remand, the judicial council decided.
The decision marked the third time Kaili appeared before the same judicial council since her arrest to request release on bail.
