The first month of the year in Greece again witnessed more layoffs, firings, end of contracts or resignations compared with new hirings, nearly 214,000 compared to more than 186,000, respectively, according to the labor ministry’s electronic monitoring platform.

The first month of the year, January, has seen this same pattern in Greece since 2001, with two exceptions, in 2014 and 2021, when more hirings positively tilted the balance.

The number of resignations, alone, exceeded 81,600.

The negative balance was 27,611 job spots.

Compared to January 2022, last month witnessed just a more than 1,800 difference, again negatively.

Of the new hires, 52.26 percent of the total were full-time employment contracts; 38.99 percent were part-time and the rest with rotational work schedules.
