One of Greece’s best footballers of all time, Mimis Papaioannou, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 81.
Papaioannou was a “one-club-man” for AEK Athens, playing at his peak in the 1960s and early 1970s, and is the popular pro team’s all-time scoring leader, with 289 goals in 566 appearances. He recorded 61 caps for the national team, scoring 21 goals.
Demetrios “Mimis” Papaioannou was born in the town of Nea Nicomedia, in the northern province of Imathia, in 1942. He had been facing serious health problems for some time.
Condolences poured in from around the country, with AEK Athens issuing a statement by which “…the family of AEK mourns the loss of the great Mimis Papaioannou… The greatest football player in the team’s history has passed into eternity.”
