“Water was and remains under public control,” said the Minister of Environment and Energy, Kostas Skrekas, after his meeting with the Board of Directors of the Panhellenic Federation of Employees of Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Enterprises (DEYA).
According to a statement from the ministry, during the meeting Mr. Skrekas described “the rumors about the alleged “privatization of water” as completely unfounded”. The aim of the legislative initiative, as emphasized by the Minister of Environment and Energy, “is to achieve the strengthening and upgrading of the role of DEYA and of course to ensure the adequate provision of water services to all citizens, safely and at affordable prices”.
Under public control
Mr. Skrekas categorically repeated, once again, that the water was and remains under public control. “We are transferring responsibilities, supervision and control in order to proceed with strengthening and upgrading the role of the Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Companies”, he added.
Finally, the Minister of Environment and Energy analyzed the importance of the bill, which is being debated in the Parliament, for public supervision and control in water management and underlined that the state retains all the regulatory-regulatory powers for the exercise of water policy, including of the costing and pricing policy of water supply and sewerage.
