“Determined to fight for her vindication”, as her lawyer has said, Eva Kaili is leaving Haren prison today, to be placed under house arrest, as the electronic monitoring bracelet was found, which she will be wearing from now on in order to return to her permanent residence, in Brussels, as stated in the decision of the judicial authorities.
The former vice-president of the European Parliament and one of the main defendants in the Qatargate scandal, is being released from prison today, Good Friday for Orthodox Christians, at 12 noon Greek time (11 Belgian time) and as she said, she “can’t wait” to be at home with her daughter , with which they will now celebrate resurrection and Easter together.
“On the first day I just want to be home with my daughter. All day with her. Since January I only saw her twice a month. I will remain in Brussels, I will continue to fight for my innocence” were the first words of Eva Kaili as reported by La Repubblica.
Kaili’s parole conditions
After Eva Kaili is released from prison, she will go to the neighborhood where she lived before, behind the European Parliament. In the same house she lived in with her partner and daughter. However, she will now live alone with her child, while Francesco Giorgi will live in a different house.
She should declare her contact telephone number with the Belgian Authorities, be always available on the same number, wear the wristband at all times and not leave her apartment, except to go to court, to the doctor or for reasons of fore majeure and always in consultation with the Prosecuting Authorities of Belgium.
It remains to be seen in the coming days whether in her new routine, she will have access to the internet or whether she will be allowed to receive visitors, apart from her partner, Francesco Giorgi, with whom she has now chosen to stay apart, although they could legally share the same roof.
What is known so far is that he cannot make contact with those involved in the scandal.
She is also banned from going abroad and her passport has been confiscated.
Kylie’s next steps until the Qatargate trial
According to legal circles in Brussels, in practice nothing has changed. House arrest means continued detention instead of a cell at home.
The investigation continues by the authorities and they point out that no verifiable claim of innocence has been found. According to them, this will be decided when the time comes for the main trial.
The Kyle side insists there were no fingerprints on the money found in the house, but others say that means nothing and she must prove she didn’t know or see the money.
According to her lawyer, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, the Greek MEP is expected to make every effort in the future, until she proves her innocence, as in any other case, she does not intend to return to Greece.
“However, the evidence that exists with the new data that we will have, documents her innocence”, said Mr. Dimitrakopoulos about the money found in her apartment, revealing that “the findings prove that she had nothing to do with this money” .
And he added: “in all the bundles that were there – improvised bundles – of money there was no fingerprint of Eva Kaili”, an element that seems to have softened the resistance of the investigator, Michel Clez, regarding her being placed under house arrest.
However, the fingerprints on the cash may reportedly belong to Panzeri and Giorgi, with the Greek MEP’s lawyer promising new revelations.
According to Mr. Dimitrakopoulos, “there are many more pieces of evidence that we will present in the interrogation”, as he explained, adding that “we respect the secrecy of the preliminary investigation and that is why we do not leak evidence of the case file”, against the barrage of publications, which followed of the arrest of his client on December 9, 2022.
It is noted that the alleged “mastermind” of the ring, Antonio Panzeri, was also released under electronic surveillance. MEP Mark Tarabella has also been put under house arrest with an electronic “bracelet”, as well as Kylie’s partner Francesco Giorgi.
