The accused for the Qatargate scandal, Eva Kaili, is now in her home in Brussels wearing a monitoring “bracelet”. Shortly before 12 noon (Greece time), a black Mercedes transported the former vice-president of the European Parliament and her lawyer, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, from Haren prison to her home in the center of Brussels.
Eva Kaili was smiling after returning to her apartment after four months and told the journalists from Greek and international media who were waiting for her that: “My daughter is waiting for me. I am very happy today. The fight continues with determination by my lawyers.”
First statements
A series of international media with their articles refer to the release of the Greek MEP, while Reuters covered her release live.
Politico describes the moments after the release of the MEP, while characteristically noting that her father Alexandros Kailis, who had been arrested with a suitcase full of money that his daughter had called him about, was seen on the balcony of the apartment smoking in the sun, drinking some hot drink.
Preceded by the release of the “3”
It should be noted that Eva Kaili was the last of the four so far accused of the infamous corruption scandal that rocked the European Parliament to be released on parole.
It was preceded by the release of Eva Kaili’s partner, Francesco Giorgi, the Belgian MEP, Mark Tarabella, and the admittedly involved in Qatargate, Antonio Panzeri, who is considered the “brain” of the ring.
The Italian former MEP was released from Saint-Gilles on Maundy Thursday, also with a “bracelet”.
The next steps for Eva Kaili
“Eva Kaili is very happy. She is close to her daughter and thinks of nothing else. He wishes all Greeks a happy Easter,” said Eva Kaili’s lawyer, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, who was in the black Mercedes next to his client.
He also spoke yesterday about how Eva Kaili, who will be under house arrest with specific rights and obligations, will move from now on.
The first restriction for Eva Kaili is that she will not be able to communicate with those involved in the Qatargate scandal. She herself will live in her house in the center of Brussels with her daughter, while Francesco Giorgi will be in another apartment.
According to Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, the MEP will only be able to communicate with George by phone, while their calls will be recorded by the authorities. Mr. Dimitrakopoulos explained that this was her wish too, as she no longer wants to have relations with her Italian partner.
Eva Kaili should declare her contact phone number with the Belgian authorities, be always available at the same number, wear the “bracelet” at all times and not leave her apartment.
From there he can leave to go to court, to a doctor or for reasons of force majeure and always in consultation with the Belgian prosecutors.
The question that exists is whether the Greek MEP will be able to access the internet or receive visitors. This will be clarified in the near future by the Belgian authorities.
We remind you that the ban on her leaving Belgium is still valid, while her passport has been kept.
The fingerprint argument
The Kaili side insists there were no fingerprints on the money found in her home, but others say that means nothing and she needs to prove she didn’t know about the money or didn’t see it.
According to Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, the Greek MEP will continue her efforts to prove her innocence and if this does not happen, she does not intend to return to Greece.
“However, the existing evidence, together with new data we will have, prove her innocence”, MEP Michalis Dimitrakopoulos said about the money found in her apartment, arguing that “the findings prove that she had nothing to do with this money ».
He added that: “in the bundles, all of which were there – improvised bundles – of money there was no fingerprint of Eva Kaili”.
According to Mr. Dimitrakopoulos, “there are many other pieces of evidence that we will present in the interrogation”, while the lawyer emphasized that “we respect the confidentiality of the preliminary investigation and that is why we are not leaking any evidence from the case file.”
