The ferry passenger traffic in the days of this year’s Easter ended up being better than last year but not as high as 2019, the last year before the onset of the pandemic.
At the same time, as shown by the data provided by the Press Office of the Ministry of Shipping to “TA NEA” newspaper, passenger traffic increased in all three major ports of Attica (Piraeus, Rafina, Lavrio), while especially on the Argosaronic lines the travelers of 2023 were more than Easter 2019.
In total, during Easter this year, 349 routes with 160,196 passengers were carried out by the three major ports (excluding the Argosaronicos lines) compared to 367 routes and 151,545 passengers last year and 353 routes and 182,049 travelers in Easter 2019. That is, an increase in passenger traffic was recorded by 5, 7% compared to 2022 and a 12% decrease compared to 2019.
Stats
In particular, according to the statistics of the Ministry of Shipping, during the Easter 2023 holidays passenger traffic to and from the port of Piraeus moved up by 3.64% this year compared to last year at Easter and was reduced by 16.4% in compared to the Easter days of 2019.
Accordingly, the number of travelers from the port of Rafina increased by 1.96% compared to Easter 2022 and decreased by 6.76% compared to 2019. More impressive are the percentages concerning the port of Lavrio, which recorded 40.6% increase in passenger traffic this year compared to last year, as well as compared to 2019 (up 10%).
It should be noted that the number of departures from the port of Lavrio was much higher this year than in previous years.
In any case, comparisons should also take into account the period when the Easter holidays fall. This year Easter fell a week earlier than last year which was the first year with reduced post-coronavirus restrictions, while in 2019 Easter Sunday was at the end of April (April 28) when the weather is better and very close to May Day (Wednesday May 1st) with the result that there are many more people interested in a trip to the islands.
101,393 passengers, 15,026 cars and 4,639 trucks traveled from Piraeus this year, from Holy Wednesday (April 12) to Easter Monday, on 144 routes, to all the Aegean islands.
Last year, during the Easter holidays (Holy Wednesday, April 20 to Easter Monday, April 25), 97,824 passengers, 15,992 cars and 4,420 trucks were transported through 148 ship itineraries.
In 2019, from Holy Wednesday, April 24 to Easter Monday, April 29, 166 ship itineraries, 121,381 passengers, 16,579 cars and 4,618 trucks were transported from the port of Piraeus.
44,148 passengers were transported from the port of Rafina on the same days this year with 127 routes, compared to 43,298 passengers with 138 routes in 2022 and 47,349 passengers in 2019 with 125 routes.
Port of Lavrio
As mentioned above, the data from the port of Lavrio is better, where 14,655 passengers were handled by 78 ship itineraries this Easter, compared to 10,423 passengers in 2022 (81 itineraries) and 13,319 passengers in Easter 2019 (62 itineraries).
As far as the Argosaronic lines are concerned, it seems that the traffic this year at Easter was better than at Easter 2019. More specifically, between Holy Wednesday and Easter Sunday this year, 288 routes were carried out and 49,006 passengers were transported, while on the same days of Easter 2019, 271 routes were carried out and 45,701 passengers were transported.
Finally, it is worth noting that the coffers of the ferry companies will have more money this year than last year as ticket prices are higher compared to Easter 2022.
