A Hellenic Air Force C-27 transport plane landed on Monday after 22.00 (20.00 GMT) in Djibouti to pick up Greek citizens evacuated earlier from strife-plagued Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, for a flight back to Greece.

The return flight is expected to land in Athens in the early morning hours of Tuesday, with a refueling stop in Egypt.

So far 28 Greek citizens, along with members of their families, have been evacuated from Sudan with the assistance of French and Italian forces.

Another 70 to 100 Greek citizens remain trapped in the country.

As of Monday, more than 1,000 foreign nationals have been evacuated from the African country in flights organized by eight countries.

Earlier, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias on Monday spoke by phone with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry, with the purpose of further coordinating actions to evacuate Greek citizens in Sudan.
