A 24-hour strike and gathering at 08:00 in the morning at the main gate of Perama is being carried out by workers of the shipbuilding-repair zone on the occasion of yesterday’s accident in a shipbuilding repair area which resulted in the death of a 47-year-old crane operator and serious injuries to two workers, a 47-year-old and a 43-year-old.
In its announcement, the Attica Metalworkers and Shipbuilding Industry Workers’ Union speaks of insufficient protection measures and unacceptable working conditions, asking for the intensification of inspections to ensure compliance with health and safety measures.
In particular, it calls for the strengthening of control mechanisms, the immediate declaration of the local contract for shipbuilding and repair work as mandatory for all companies in the sector by the Ministry of Labor and its application in all workplaces.
In the meantime, the Port Authority of Perama proceeded to arrest four people. The arrests concern the ship’s master, the safety technician – supervisor of workers’ health and safety measures, the employer of the crane operator and the representative of the company that carried out the repair work.
